“Nia is movement-medicine for the body and soul”

NIA,
short for Neuromuscular Integrative Action, is a barefoot movement combining the expressiveness of dance, the precision and power of the martial arts and the wisdom of the healing arts. Nia addresses the whole person using a comprehensive, holistic exercise approach. It empowers people to achieve physical, mental, emotional and spiritual well being. The music of Nia is dynamic and intriguing. Personal expression is encouraged. Focus on sensations in the body allows you to become present in the moment. You will learn to listen to the voice of your body and allow the body to guide you into experiencing the joy of movement.

Nia is self-guided, adaptable and safe for any fitness level, from stiff beginners to highly fit athletes. Delivering cardiovascular, whole-body conditioning, Nia is based on creating a loving relationship with the body and following The Body’s Way – the innate intelligence of the body.

HISTORY
Debbie Rosas and Carlos Rosas began creating Nia in California during the early 1980s at the height of the high impact aerobics craze. Desiring to find a way to stay fit and find wellness for the whole body, they took off their shoes and starting searching for the perfect blend of movement forms that would fulfill their vision.

Nia Blends Nine Movement Forms:

Martial Arts: T’ai Chi, Tae Kwon Do, Aikido
Dance Arts: Jazz Dance, Modern Dance, Duncan Dance
Healing Arts:
Yoga, Alexander Technique, The Teachings of Moshe Feldenkrais

Today, Nia has over 2,000 licensed teachers in more than 37 countries worldwide.  You can find information about trainings, education and support as well as DVDs, CDs and Nia clothing at Nia founders’ website. www.nianow.com
